The pandemic has turned our homes into not only a place of rest, but a place of work and socialization. The last two years of our lives have been spent primarily at home, and with this trend continuing in 2022, our interior spaces have been changing to reflect this new lifestyle. Creating a serene space at home and blending practicality and style are some of the biggest considerations when renovating and redecorating this year.

Curved Furniture: Curved furniture instantly makes a room feel more warm and welcoming. Much of our indoor space is going to be angular and boxy, and having a curved centre piece such as a couch softens up the space instantly. This is a great option if you love to entertain!

Thoughtful Outdoor Spaces: As more time is spent outside in backyards, and on patios or terraces, enhancing outdoor spaces has become a top priority for many people. Outdoor space has become a true extension of indoor space, with barbecues, kitchens of all sizes, extended seating options and patios, pools and play areas all being added to give outdoor spaces an upgrade.

Nature-Inspired Tones & Decor: The era of neutral greys and stark whites are being replaced by colours and decor that bring us closer to nature. Soft browns, mossy greens, olive shades, and neutral beige colours are making a comeback. Materials such as stone, terracotta, bamboo and glass add a raw, calming element to interior spaces, and large, leafy plants bring an added serenity to a home.

Textures & Layers: Continuing to move away from minimalism, expect to see lots of textures and layers in 2022. An easy way to accomplish this is through printed wallpaper. While wallpaper doesn’t always evoke the best connotations, a pop of colour on your wall with a modern design can add some huge personality to your home. Enhance this personality even further by adding layers into your home. Whether it’s paintings and prints on top of your wallpaper, layering through throws, pillows and carpets, or colourful window coverings, adding a mix of patterns into your home can really brighten the space.

Vintage Designs: The 70’s is making a comeback this year. Vintage touches can be easily added to a home to give it a creative, antique look. This can be accomplished through materials and textures, such as velvet or wooden furniture, curved silhouettes (see Curved Furniture), or colourful accents, such as burnt oranges and greens. Choosing an antique piece instead of shopping brand new is also a much more sustainable choice.
