Spring cleaning after a long winter is an event on many families’ to do lists. Whether it’s an event you are eagerly anticipating, or one that you dread, it is a very important step in your home maintenance routine. Giving your home the thorough once-over in spring can prevent unwanted surprises later, lowering your long term maintenance costs, save you time, and keep your home in tip top shape overall. Make sure to include all of these items below in your spring cleaning checklist.

1. Check your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. Make sure to give them a good dusting, test them to ensure they’re working, and install new batteries if needed.

2. Ensure gutters and downspouts are clear. These can get clogged over time, preventing water from draining and causing water damage and rot. Make sure to remove all debris and patch up any holes you see.

3. Replace your air filters. Replacing your air filters should be done every season, and spring is no exception. Clean air filters are an important key to clean air inside your home, and makes it much easier for your air conditioning to function properly.

4. Inspect Your Basement. Your basement can be a hotspot for issues, especially after the winter season. Check for signs of leaks or water damage, as this can have a hazardous impact on your home’s foundation, as well as contribute to mould growth and pest infestations. Your sump pump plays an important role in directing water away from your foundation, have it inspected to ensure it’s working in proper order.

5. Check Your Roof. Your roof is another spot where issues can build up if left unchecked. Damages to flashing and shingles, as well as leaking are all more common headaches to look for during your spring cleaning checkup.

6. Ensure windows and doors are properly sealed. The cold air can damage the caulking around windows and doors, and may need replacing once spring comes around. Having properly sealed windows and doors prevent energy from being wasted.

7. Ensure your exhaust fans are tested. Your bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans take away moist air from inside your home. If the air isn’t vented properly, the moisture can cause issues like mould.

8. Yard maintenance: After all the snow is cleared, it’s time to take out those BBQ’s, landscaping tools, and head to your local shop to get some flowers and herbs to beautify your yard. Check to make sure there aren’t any damages to your deck if you have one, and pull out the patio furniture for those relaxing summer evenings.

While spring cleaning can be tedious, being diligent about these tasks is sure to put your mind at ease so you can enjoy the warmer months ahead!
